These traps are quite large to catch rats. There are smaller traps to catch mice which might be more suitable.

Rats (and mice) have a very sweet tooth. I simply drip honey on mine so they take time getting their tongue in the grooves and that front paw creeps forward and crash! I have crushed 4 skulls this week so far. Filthy disease carrying vermin! Crafty blighters they learn quick but once they taste nectar it disarms them -the last mistake they make!

We would recommend that you use them with bait boxes to house the traps, therefore the cats would not be able to set the traps off.

Q: Do these traps need to be covered or can they be left out in the open without affecting the bait.

You should cover the traps, first because that way you only trap the target rodents, and not birds or hedgehogs, secondly, ys, the weather will affect the bait, depending on what it is. I found the best way is to place close to a wall on the rodents normal route ( they tend to keep to walls or fences rather than open ground) , lean an old floorboard or plank over the trap at an angle, so as to protect from non target species i also tie some wire to the trap and secure it , dtops the big ones taking the traps away!. Best bait is peanut butter. Hope that helps
