Perfect
Fantastic for making flour tortillas. Takes a bit to heat up, an indicator light would be nice, but it stayed hot and quickly pressed the tortillas. Tortillas didn't stick, and just had a quick wipedown when finished.

Prensa tortilla maker
It was a well built unit mostly for tortilla, but it was not useful for chapati/roti making. One downside of the unit was it took 10 minutes to warm up and there was no indicator light to know complete heating. Whole wheat dough sticks to the plate surface regardless of the use of oil coating, and placing the dough between two parchment papers made the issue worst. Perhaps mylar sheets would be better. I did not try keeping the raw chapati in the heated unit to see if it would make cooked chapati. However, dough balls made with all purpose flour with adequate amount of oil were well pressed between two pieces of parchment papers and came out just fine for deep frying. Although I liked the all metal unit with polished aluminum heating surfaces, no risk of non-stick coating and its performance for making flour puri, I could not go beyond 4 stars for the said reasons.February 27,2024: I initially really liked this tortilla maker; however, over a month period I realized that this unit was not what actually described. The unit takes over 10 min to heat up, but the temperature, whatever it is (no way to know and there is no indicator light) falls rapidly just after pressing just one whole wheat or flour dough ball. The temperature dropped so fast that all subsequent dough balls either stuck to the plates or partly warmed, and had to be discarded. I even pressed between two sheets of parchment paper but the dough horribly stuck to the paper causing me to discard all. I used regular non-stick chapati maker with superb result. Unfortunately my unit quit after working flawlessly for over 20 years. Poor temperature control makes this Prensa unit basically useless. Therefore, based on my experience, I discourage others from buying this unit and re-rated the unit as one star. I have ordered a usual non-stick chapati maker from Amazon. Based on conflicting rating, it may not last like my previous unit but at least I will not be so disappointed in making wheat/flour chapatis.

Place your dough ball off center and they you will get perfect thin tortillas.
Makes nice and thin. Have to place it off center towards the back because otherwise it’s presses out and the back is empty.

OMG! Amazing Product
I chose to give this product a 5 star review for two reasons. First, the shipping was expedient with no damage to the product. Second, this product works EXTREMELY well. I have purchased non electric tortilla presses in the past with very minimal success. The tortillas always came out lopsided and too thick for my liking (also the traditional hand operated ones could only be used to make corn tortillas). With the heat this device provides, the home cook can now have fresh flower tortillas in no time. The home cook can make any size tortillas they want based on the weight of the dough ball. I prefer my tortillas to be smaller so I used around 20 grams of dough to make the sized I wanted. A 50 gram dough ball (about the size of a golf ball) will easily fill out the entire press with ease which is 7 & 14/16th inches in diameter. When using this product allow the device to preheat for at least ten minutes. At the same time preheat your pan you are going to use to cook them. I used a ten inch Calphalon hard anodized aluminum fry pan; the tortillas never stuck and came out beautifully. I do have two comals but decided not to use those initially. The device really does par cook the tortillas and you do need to finish them off in a fry pan, skillet, or comal to finish cooking. I used all purpose flower and have not yet tried whole wheat flour or masa flour.I like the fact that this device is reasonably priced for the job it performs. Other devices like this are much more expensive and geared more for restaurants than the home cook. With this product the home cook can crank out fresh tortillas in no time. using more than one pan will help speed up the process because the press itself will flatten and par cook tortillas very quickly. you will be slowed down by the 45-60 seconds it takes to completely cook the tortillas. I would estimate that someone could make 1 flour tortilla every 5 seconds just using the tortillas press (not including time it takes to cook in the pan). When using the press, place the dough ball down and close the lid. press down with the handle for about three seconds, release, then press down again for about 5 - 7 seconds. Steam will come out and you will hear a hissing noise as the steam escapes. Open the lid and use a wooden spatula to take the tortilla off (they will be hot) and place in the pan to cook...it is that easy.I would recommend this product to the home cook or to someone who sells tacos on a taco truck. This device takes up very little space. By using this product, you will be able to take good homemade tacos to another level and make them great. I will be trying to make corn tortillas tomorrow (26 June 2014) and will report on the success or failure of the attempt. On another note the plug is geared for use in US homes at 120 volts and not the 220 volt outlets that are used outside the United States.

Good for prepping corn tortillas
I specifically bought this tortilla press/grill to cook corn tortillas. I have good news and bad news.First, the bad news. After preparing a dozen separate corn tortillas, I was unsuccessful in getting a thoroughly cooked tortilla with good consistency off of the machine. The best I could do was an overcooked product at four minutes of heating. Here's the good news. What worked was to press and then heat the tortilla in the device for 30 seconds, slip a pancake spatula under it, and transfer to a hot teflon pan. I then finished my tortilla off at 20 seconds per side. Using this method, I got thin, soft corn tortillas with good consistency.Prior to getting this device, I used a cold tortilla press but always managed to tear the tortillas as I tried to move them off the press and onto the grill. I tried everything: Wax paper, plastic wrap, but nothing worked. The tortilla press/grill plus the teflon pan enabled me to cook untorn, thin corn tortillas for the very first time, using the method described above. It will be interesting to cook wheat flour flat bread to go along with the Indian and middle eastern foods that I adore. Hopefully, I'll have better luck with that.
